a brief history ... of 38 years of service
The
Rotary Club of Belconnen (originally known as the Rotary Club of Canberra-Belconnen), was
conceptualised in late 1970 and formally established in February 1971. Early efforts to raise funds for projects and community
support activities started with chocolate wheels, "chook" raffles and
similar activities.
After a trip away, a member returned with the idea of a
"Trash and Treasure" market. And hence was born in September
1974 what today is known as the Rotary Trash'n'Treasure Market at Jamison - a
Canberra Icon.
That original market, in somewhat poor weather, raised just
over $300. Many of the original stall holders operated from their car
boot. It basically resembled a bit of what today is more commonly
known as a "garage sale".
Over 34 years and 1,750 markets later the funds raised to support a variety of
local, national and international community and related projects is nearing
$4,000,000.
Today, hours of operation are from 06:00am until
01:00pm every
Sunday.
To be a part of the market is easy, just examine the links
